“Them that know… know that they know. Them that don’t know…they don’t know they don’t know.”
Dem Dat Know by Maria Muldaur
I brought my new kitten home from The Anti-Cruelty Society on Thursday, thinking she would settle in for a couple of days and then we would play kitten games. Well… she has been sick so I spent the weekend worrying about what should be done. She just lay around and sneezed and didn’t eat and acted miserable.
On Monday the vet at the shelter called back and gave me the run down. Based on current symptoms, she has an upper respiratory infection (URI) that will last about three weeks. The vet says URI is a pet version of the flue. My main job is to try to keep her appetite up and look close to be sure the URI doesn’t move into her eyes. Now I know a lot more than I did and can worry much less.
Fortunately, contrary to the song, I was pretty sure that I knew that I didn’t know… or something like that. I was wondering if clients don’t feel that way a lot of the time before they decide on counseling. Will this work itself out? Is it just a phase? Do I really need help? What if I call and they think my problem is silly… Of course the only way to know is to call and find out. Asking someone who knows that they know is a good idea.
